Devlog 3 – Unreal Engine 5 Simulations

Week 3

In Week 3 of the design project, all of our work has been completed. We have our project laid out and uploaded, a test cinematic in our world of the island running in Unreal Engine 5. We work on our paper and presentation slowly, but have been backlogged from the start of a snow storm. Progress went well throughout the week, and everyone did their part to make it functional in one way or another, although overall I wish the project turned out much better. It was not anyone’s fault in particular, moreso the time constraint and finding out that a lot of the Unreal Engine creations were harder to make in the given time frame if not impossible without intimate knowledge of the coding and node system.

Personal Progress

I had finished the water and was continuing to tinker with it throughout the week. One of the main goals we were hoping to achieve after already getting such nice looking water was the creation of foam in to the water to add to the realism, especially near the front of the beach. People show in their videos how they make the water move around the prop rocks, but it turns out it is much more complicated of a process than Unreal Engine makes known. It also seems, though my research, that the water projects have been dropped by Unreal Engine 5, which I hope isn’t true, since what was seen was quite nice in its most simple state. Either way, the water was finished and eventually added into the main world with the island, then the island was painted with a landscape environment, filled with foliage and flora, and the volcano was given its smoky trail. We then filmed the cinematic and turned in the project.

Week 3 Conclusion

With the project finished and behind us, and the presentation ahead, we had to prepare for it. The issue of the snow storm causing only further disconnection and communication issues before the big day is mildly troubling. All in all, we keep up online communications and will work towards our project presentation on Thursday.
