Game Review – Terraria
In a world filled with the popularized First-Person Shooters, it can be easy for someone to think that there just aren’t games for them. FPS games are very competitive, and some people who are skilled or cheat can push a person away from many games. This is one main reason I tend to go towards sandbox games, along with my love for creativity. As one previously-spoken about game, Minecraft is one of my favorite sandbox games. One such other, and one that I have put several thousand hours into, is Terraria.
Re-Logic created Terraria in 2011, released as a simple 2D platformer sandbox game. Slowly, I have watched the game grow in terms of graphics, gameplay, replayability, and even subtle hints at lore hidden in the game. When I first got into the game, only half of the current gameplay was present. When you spawn into the world after creating your own character, you enter a 2D platformer landscape. As you gather materials and mine, you fight different creatures and can use a vast multitude of weapons and armors, along with accessories that give you buffs and abilities in order to fight bosses and unlock stronger equipment to keep up with the progression.
Starting as a simple indie game, this simple, cheap game has not failed to get awards year after year, not being over a decade since its release. To the day the creators show their passion for their creation, releasing free updates and allowing mod creators to create endlessly, allowing for many hours of enjoyable gameplay. On top of all of that, the game has a very small price tag of 10 USD, or 29.99 USD for 4 copies, if you have friends you wish to play with, along with constant sales down to 2.50 USD.
One critique I would have to have for the game is it’s graphics. While it is amazing, even the creators admit it is not as advanced as it could be. With this game being made in 2011, technology has advanced, so there is a limitation on how much they can do with the game. Even so, they have tempted the idea of creating a new, updated version, giving it an allowance of more RAM so they can continue to push the game forward.
Other than that one critique, there isn’t anything I can really say to say anything bad about this game. It is singularly one of my favorite games, and if you have never played it, I very much recommend it to you.
