As the Director of Research and Manager of the Indoor Air Program (IAP) at The University of Tulsa since 1987, Dr. Richard Shaughnessy and his staff have established a program that is internationally recognized for its work dedicated to improving the indoor air quality in homes, schools and workplace environments. In addition, extensive research is ongoing which examines the impact of poor indoor air quality on the academic performance of our nation’s students. The IAP is housed in the Chemical Engineering Department and The University of Tulsa.

Dr. Richard Shaughnessy is the President of the National Indoor Air Quality 2024 Conference and been involved with membership for over 20 years. He has taught and conducted research abroad in China, Australia, South Africa and Scandinavia, publishing extensively with respect to his studies on particulate research, air cleaner evaluations, indoor chemistry, flooring studies, children’s asthma and housing conditions, and resolution and remediation of bioaerosol related problems.

Dr. Ulla Haverinen-Shaughnessy is our Senior Research Associate and Visiting Professor. As Senior Research Associate / Visiting Professor at the University of Tulsa Indoor Air Program, she has participated in studies on indoor air quality in residential buildings and schools since 2006. As Professor at The University of Oulu, Finland since 2020, she has developed both education and research in the area of good indoor air and building health. As Senior Researcher at The National Institute for Health and Welfare between 2007 – 2016, she has coordinated and participated in research projects both in Finland in EU. As Adjunct Professor at Tampere University she has engaged in research collaboration since 2007. She has participated in developing World Health Organization (WHO) Tools for monitoring Parma conference commitments in 2010-2015, collaborated with WHO on identification of interventions to reduce health effects from dampness and mold; quantifying the burden of housing-related disease; and development of environmental health information systems to support policy making in 2007-2009. Dr. Shaughnessy has Co-Chaired ISES-ISIAQ 2019 joint conference and served as International Scientific Committee member of Indoor Air 2018, 2020 and 2022, and Healthy Buildings Europe 2017 conferences. She was awarded a post-doctoral research grant by the Academy of Finland 2005-2008, as well as a Fulbright Research Grant for post-doctoral studies at Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago in 2002-2004.

Heather Streeter, Project Assistant, University of Tulsa Indoor Air Program, is the Project Manager for a HUD study validating a DNA-based mold classification tool for assessing remediation clearance, and provides administrative and technical support of projects. Her experience includes over nine years as a project manager, with 12 years in contract analysis and negotiations, a B.S. in Pre-Law Paralegal at Southern Illinois University, and is currently seeking her Masters in International Business Law through University of Oklahoma School of Law.
