Once you know the type of content you will use posts for in your site, determine how to break that content up into groups. Some items can be in more than one group. Then create categories out of these groups. Categories help to organize the content. It’s ideal to have at least three categories but no more than a couple dozen. In some cases, you can just stick to the default category.
You can create categories in two ways.
- Category management area – This is found under Posts from the left admin menu. The category management page lets you see all the categories and makes it easy to add and edit categories. This method allows you to set a couple of basic settings for a category.
- Post settings area – This is found on the right-hand panel on an individual post. This gives you a quick option to add a category quickly. This is where you set a category for a post as well. Here is how to do this:
- Click the Post tab at the top of the right-hand rail.
- About half-way down, you’ll see the Categories section. (This is where you set the category for your post)
- Click Add New Category, fill in the name, select a Parent Category if it has one, click Add New Category button.
Always save your work by re-publishing the post/page. Click the blue Update button in the top right-hand corner.
