Competition

APPLICATION: Teachers must complete an application in order to register one or more teams. After completing this application, a team registration link will be sent to the teacher. Only teachers (school personnel, bringing the students) can complete this application.

APPLICATIONS are due October 28.

REGISTRATION is due October 29 – Registration of all teams and team members.

The competition is comprised of secondary student teams competing in one of three categories:

  • All Girls teams (middle or high)
  • All Boys teams (middle or high)
  • Co-ed teams (mixed ages/gender)

Each team consists of five students.

Each team should be comprised of at least four Native American students.

Teams must have a teacher/educator sponsor. Teachers can sponsor more than one team.

There is no charge for the event – it is fully funded by Oklahoma EPSCoR, the National Science Foundation, and The University of Tulsa.

Breakfast snacks and lunch will be provided.

The students will be supervised by instructors, graduate and undergraduate students throughout the events.

During the day, teams will be competing in a variety of challenges. Some may include:

  • Scavenger Hunts
  • Physics challenge
  • Science Olympiad
  • Engineering Activities

Poster Contest

As part of the federally funded grant that is helping to support this STEM competition, students are asked to create a poster. The rationale behind this requirement is to provide students with an opportunity to research STEM topics and to share their findings with fellow students.

This year’s topic: Native Americans have made many contributions to science, including in medicine, engineering, astronomy, and mathematics.

Research the topic to find out more. Posters can be created on tri-fold boards (example: science fair boards), should be student-developed, and will be graded on creativity, content and appearance.

Presentations to schools – REQUIRED

During the day, TU graduate and undergraduate students will be following teams around campus and taking pictures of all students and teams participating in the competitions. We will share all of these pictures with the teachers with a link.

Once back at school, we would like the students to promote the STEM competition to their classmates, to the administration, and to local agencies that support science and math in schools.

** If a presentation is going to be given to any group (a class, some teachers, or administrators), we need to observe this presentation if possible.

Please contact Dr. Brown when this presentation will occur and he will visit your school.  You are welcome to use all of the pictures and videos we take to help in your presentation.  Presentations to schools are an expectation of the funding agency. We will observe as many presentations as possible. All presentations need to be observed by May 2025.
