University of Tulsa Users

All faculty, staff and students of The University of Tulsa are considered internal users. Different fee schedules, however, may apply depending on how the research is funded.

Internal users with appropriate training and experience may be allowed to use the laboratory independently, at the discretion of the laboratory manager, resulting in a reduced fee for ‘unassisted work’. If help is needed some of the time, billing will be itemized as to unassisted and assisted time.

Any student with a project which requires the use of the NanoLab may receive up to four hours of training, upon the approval of their faculty advisor. Training is conducted using the student’s sample, and these hours are billed on a 1:1 basis, i.e. 2 hours of work would result in 1 billed hour and 1 unbilled ‘training’ hour. Training hours are subsidized by The University of Tulsa Office of Research.

A valid account number is required before beginning work. If you have not used the laboratory before, you will be asked to supply a valid account number.

Internal researchers should consider applying for a Faculty or Student Research Grant from The University of Tulsa Office of Research. It provides up to $1000 for Faculty or $500 for students which can be used to pay instrument fees. Deadlines for Faculty grants are April 1 and November 1. Deadlines for student grants are the end of the third week of classes each semester, and May 4 for the summer semester.

**please note that in the case of a consulting relationship between an internal user and an outside commercial organization, work performed pursuant to that relationship will be assessed at a commercial rate unless the PI can justify otherwise.

‘Internally-Funded’ is defined as work that is (a) conducted by an internal user, and (b) funded by a University of Tulsa student or faculty research grant, or by start-up funding provided by The University of Tulsa. Costs for ‘Internally-funded’ use of NanoLab instrumentation are subsidized by The University of Tulsa Office of Research.

‘Externally-Funded’ is defined as work that is (a) conducted by an internal user, but (b) funded by a grant external to The University of Tulsa.

Non University of Tulsa Users

The University of Tulsa welcomes use of the nanocharacterization and fabrication facilities by external researchers, both academic and commercial.
Collaborative programs with faculty and staff are encouraged where such arrangements would enhance the research capability of both parties.

An Academic User is someone who is not a faculty/staff/student member of the University of Tulsa but who is conducting work on behalf of another University or other academic establishment (including hospital-based research).

A Commercial User is someone who is not affiliated with an academic institution or hospital, or a TU faculty or staff member who is using the facility on behalf of a commercial entity.

External users who are trained microscopists may operate the instrumentation independently, at the sole discretion of the laboratory manager. The same hourly fee applies.
External users should note that though the NanoLab will offer assistance in interpretation of data, the external user ultimately bears sole responsibility for the application of the results to their project.

If you are interested in scheduling time at the NanoLab, please use the contact form.

Access to Facilities

NanoLab is typically open on work days from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. Night/weekend use privileges are at the discretion of the laboratory manager.

SEM/FIB scheduling is perfomed using an online calendar available at http://labagenda.com

Billing

Billing for all users is based upon actual logged usage of the NanoLab, in half hour increments, according to the published fee schedule. Invoices will be issued the first week of the month for the previous month’s usage. In some cases, fees for supplies or sample preparation may be applied; users will be notified of these fees in advance. Charges are due when billed; failure to pay will result in loss of user privileges. External users should make checks payable to The University of Tulsa and remit to:

External users may also pay by card, either via http://www.utulsa.edu/offices-and-services/controller/departments/bursars-office.aspx (click on “make a payment”) or by calling 918-631-2600.

Reports and Publications

We very much appreciate being informed of publications and grant applications in which NanoLab research has been included. Acknowledgment of the use of the NanoLab is particularly helpful in ensuring ongoing support for the lab: “This work made use of the Nano Characterization and Fabrication Laboratory of the University of Tulsa.” A copy of any such publications would be appreciated.
