Address inequality, whether related to income, gender, age, disability, race, ethnicity, or other factors and work towards sustainable development and social cohesion.
This goal envisions a world where inequalities are reduced, and all individuals and groups have equal opportunities to lead fulfilling lives, regardless of their background or circumstances. Achieving this goal is essential not only for promoting social justice and human rights but also for creating a more stable, peaceful, and sustainable world where everyone can actively participate in and benefit from the global development process.
The University of Tulsa contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 10 in several ways:
- Scholarship Programs: Offer scholarship programs and financial aid packages that aim to reduce financial barriers to education, ensuring that students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds have access to higher education.
- Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives: Promote diversity and inclusion on campus by implementing policies, programs, and initiatives that create an inclusive and welcoming environment for students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds.
- Access to Education: Develop outreach programs and partnerships with local schools and communities to encourage underrepresented groups, including low-income and first-generation college students, to pursue higher education.
- Equal Opportunity Employment: Ensure equal opportunity employment practices within the university, including fair hiring, promotion, and pay practices that do not discriminate based on gender, race, ethnicity, or other factors.
- Inclusive Curriculum: Review and adapt curricula to be inclusive and culturally responsive, recognizing the value of diverse perspectives and backgrounds in education.
- Community Engagement: Engage with the local community to address inequalities and contribute to community development through initiatives related to education, healthcare, and economic empowerment.
- Support Services: Provide support services such as counseling, mentorship, and academic assistance to help students overcome challenges related to inequality, including those related to race, gender, disability, or socioeconomic status.
- International Engagement: Promote global awareness and understanding of inequality by offering international programs, study abroad opportunities, and international partnerships that address global inequalities.
- Collaboration with Underserved Communities: Collaborate with underserved communities, local organizations, and nonprofits to address inequality issues such as poverty, access to education, and healthcare disparities.
- Advocacy and Social Responsibility: Encourage students, faculty, and staff to actively engage in advocacy and community service activities that address inequalities and promote social responsibility.
By actively pursuing these initiatives, TU contributes to SDG 10 by promoting inclusivity, reducing inequalities within its campus community, and preparing students to address broader societal inequalities. These efforts align with the goal of creating a more equitable and just society where everyone has equal access to opportunities and resources, regardless of their background or circumstances.
