Creating urban environments that are inclusive, resilient, safe, and sustainable.
This goal envisions a future where cities and communities are resilient, environmentally sustainable, socially inclusive, and economically vibrant. Achieving this goal is crucial for addressing the challenges posed by rapid urbanization, ensuring that urban areas are safe and healthy places to live, and contributing to the broader objectives of sustainable development, including the reduction of poverty and inequality.
The University of Tulsa strives to contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 11 in various ways:
- Sustainable Campus Development: Implement sustainable practices in campus development and infrastructure projects, including energy-efficient buildings, green transportation options, and waste reduction programs.
- Research on Urban Issues: Conduct research on mobility, community, and other urban issues to contribute knowledge and solutions that benefit cities and communities.
- Community Engagement: Engage with the local community to address urban challenges and contribute to community development through initiatives related to education, healthcare, and economic empowerment.
- Promotion of Sustainable Transportation: Encourage the use of sustainable transportation options among students and staff, such as biking, walking, carpooling, and public transportation, to reduce traffic congestion and emissions.
- Community-University Partnerships: Foster partnerships with local government agencies, non-profits, and community organizations to collaborate on projects and initiatives that promote sustainable urban development.
- Awareness and Education: Raise awareness among students and the community about the importance of sustainable cities and communities through educational programs, workshops, and public outreach.
- Waste Reduction and Recycling: Implement waste reduction and recycling programs on campus to minimize environmental impacts and promote responsible resource management.
- International Engagement: Promote international collaboration and exchanges related to sustainable urban development to share best practices and innovative solutions.
- Inclusivity and Accessibility: Ensure that the campus is inclusive and accessible for all, including individuals with disabilities, to reflect the principles of universal design and inclusivity.
By taking these actions, TU contributes to SDG 11 by promoting sustainable practices, educating future urban planners and leaders, and actively engaging with the local community to address urban challenges. These efforts align with the goal of creating more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive cities and communities, not only on campus but also within the broader region where the university is located.
